about us

It would be fair to say we are better at talking about sponsorship than talking about ourselves, but if you want to know who we are and what we’re about, just scroll down or click on the subject that interests you:

About Kim Skildum-Reid

Power Sponsorship is the brainchild of Kim Skildum-Reid, one of the world’s top corporate sponsorship consultants, trainers, speakers, and authors, with 24 years experience across the US, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Australasia.

Born and raised in Minnesota, over the better part of a decade, Kim worked for numerous Fortune 500 companies in the US on their sponsorships of blue chip properties as diverse as the Superbowl, US Open Golf, and the International Chili Society Cook-Offs, as well as dozens of major professional sporting organisations and national concert tours.

Kim moved to Australia in September 1992, and in January 1994 she started her own consultancy, Skildum-Reid Consulting, specialising in corporate-side sponsorship strategy. Her clients include many of the top sponsors in Australasia and around the world, such as Target Stores, Singapore Government, Qantas, QBE, ANZ Bank, Ergon Energy, General Motors, Lion Nathan Brewing, Mazda, Telstra, and the Dubai Government.

Kim is recognised around the world as a dynamic and insightful speaker. Her enthusiastic style and practical approach have made her highly sought-after, with consistently rave reviews.  She also writes, with many dozens of articles and columns to her credit, and provides expert commentary on sponsorship to organisations such as CNN, CNBC Asia, the Harvard Business Review, ABC, and the Canadian Broadcast Corporation, among others.

Kim tours extensively, providing top quality sponsorship workshops, keynote speeches, in-house training, and customised strategy sessions on a variety of subjects to both sponsors and sponsorship seekers around the world.

Kim co-wrote her first book, The Sponsorship Seeker’s Toolkit, which was published by McGraw-Hill in May 1999, to enthusiastic reviews and worldwide sales that continue to far exceed expectations in its Third Edition. The Sponsor’s Toolkit, was released globally in May 2002, to more outstanding reviews.

Kim’s book, The Ambush Marketing Toolkit, was released in August 2007, receiving an overwhelmingly positive (and rather shocked reception) to its practical and balanced take on this controversial practice.

Kim is married and has a little girl in kindergarten. They live happily in Sydney’s inner-west in a house full of animals, art, sports gear, and laundry.

Our charitable/community initiatives

Kim Skildum-Reid is an idealist. She has missions, and you’re really best not to get in her way when she’s on one of them. When it comes to how this company is run, saving the world (or at least a little corner of it) was always going to be part of the mission.

Our approach to looking after the world and our community is threefold:

1. We make significant donations/investments in a number of charitable activities

For several years, Kim has donated 100% of her hardcopy book royalties - thousands of dollars a year - to UNICEF. In a new initiative, we are also investing 1% of our gross turnover for the 07/08 financial year for microlending in developing countries through the amazing Kiva.org. Click here to see our Kiva lender page to see who we’ve funded so far.

2. We use the expertise we have to provide better sponsorship skills to charitable organisations

In addition to making a special effort to provide pertinent blogs, white papers, speeches, and media commentary to up-skill charities, and making training available to charitable organisations at big discounts, we have run a couple of major initiatives in recent years.

  • In 2003, we ran a six-month intensive training session for six charities, entitled Sponsorship School. This has been available as an on-line learning opportunity since then and is now being turned into an e-book.
  • In 2006, we ran The 100 Charities Program, putting 200 people from 100 charitable organisations in Australia and New Zealand through our groundbreaking DIY Sponsorship Workshop for 15% of the normal price (about one-quarter what it cost us to run the program!).

We will continue to create and deliver training programs and materials specifically aimed at the charitable sector.

3. We do our best to live and work in a responsible, sustainable manner

Every year, we calculate our business’ (and Kim’s family’s) carbon emissions and donate to www.carbonneutral.com.au to plant trees to offset those emissions. We average between 600-750 trees per year, dependent largely on air travel. This is doubly effective, as the trees are planted on agricultural land, combating the effects of over-clearing by previous generations, such as rising salinity and erosion.

We’re big recyclers, use energy-efficient lighting and recycled paper products, are on 100% green electricity (a mix of hydro, wind, and geothermal), use public transport, and Kim’s family has five rainwater tanks under their house to reduce reliance on Australia’s drought-stricken water reserves.

In other words, we're doing our best.
